School Visits
Using my book
The Ultimate Weapon: The Race to Build the Atomic Bomb as the context, I
discuss the research process and the stages of writing and publishing a book. An
important goal of my talk is to help students understand the impact of
historical events on the present and future. Encouraging students to research
and write about their own interests is another important aspect of the program.
Included in the program is a PowerPoint presentation featuring photographs from
the book. I also include some personal background about myself like how I became
interested in writing, what it is like to be a writer, and my writing rituals.
My presentations are appropriate for students in grades 5 and
up. I can do up to four one-hour sessions per day. I prefer to speak in a
relatively intimate space like a classroom or library. Smaller audiences are
always better to allow for more interaction between myself and them. To schedule
a school visit, please contact Catherine Balkin at
